This is a Blended Learning Course, consisting of both an online, self-directed portion, followed by an in-person skills testing session with an ASLS Instructor.

Please read the course description in its entirety.

With a shared goal of reducing deaths and disabilities for stroke victims, the American Heart Association, in partnership with The University of Miami’s Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education, has released the new Advanced Stroke Life Support Blended Learning course. This course, now offered as the AHA’s newest card-credentialing course discipline, educates healthcare professionals to identify, evaluate, and manage patients with stroke.

Developed by experts in stroke, emergency medicine, prehospital care, and nursing education, the ASLS curriculum is now widely used by hundreds of hospitals, fire rescue, ambulance and EMS systems, and educational institutions throughout the country and around the globe. The course is also designed to meet the staff education requirements for the premier certifications for stroke systems of care from the Joint Commission’s Advanced Certifications.

ASLS is appropriate for healthcare professionals in both prehospital and in-hospital settings involved in the management of acute stroke patients. This advanced course is ideal for:

  • Stroke Coordinators
  • Nursing Students and Nurses
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
  • Paramedics and Emergency Medical Personnel
  • Physicians
  • Physician Assistants
  • Residents and Fellows
  • Medical Students
  • Respiratory Therapists

There are 3 tracks available for students to learn how to assess and manage stroke emergencies: prehospital, in-hospital, and a third track that covers both settings. Learning objectives for these tracks include:

Prehospital Provider Course:

  • Highlights the principles of prehospital stroke management that make up the current standard of care, such as determining when to call
  • a stroke alert and quickly transport the patient to the nearest appropriate facility
  • Explains how to communicate the patient’s symptoms, time of onset, and neuro-logic exam clearly and succinctly with hospital personnel

In-Hospital Provider Course:

  • Focuses on the importance of an organized approach to treating stroke patients for improved outcomes
  • Discusses the etiologic evaluation and secondary stroke prevention for stroke patients
  • Describes the management of goals for acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Outlines post-acute care management including supportive medical care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning for stroke patients

Prehospital & In-Hospital Provider Course:

  • Combines all of the components of the Prehospital and In-Hospital courses, and is best suited for healthcare providers who work in both environments, as well as ASLS instructor candidates that will be conducting the in-person skills testing for learners from both audiences

Blended Learning

The ASLS course is now offered in a Blended Learning format, consisting of both an online, self-directed portion, followed by an in-person skills testing session with an ASLS Instructor. In the online component, learners follow a continuously adapting learning path that is personalized by their own inputs, for not only their performance, but also their self-reported confidence levels. In-person skills tests challenge learners to apply the knowledge obtained from the online portion to correctly perform neurologic exams, diagnose, and manage patients with stroke. Blended learning enables students to learn on their own time, at their own pace, while instructors can focus on the important psychomotor skills testing and ensure that training is consistent.

Prerequisite: Students MUST possess a current AHA BLS Provider card

The #1 cause of death for Firefighters on duty are cardiorespiratory emergencies. Firematic operations place a tremendous strain on even the fittest personnel. ANYONE can be overcome by the exertion and/ or suffer a cardiac event.

It's not a case of "If...", but "When..."

When a medical emergency happens, and the Firefighter is in full PPE with SCBA and gear, can you QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY:

  • Rapidly identify the Firefighter in distress/ respiratory arrest/ cardiac arrest WHILE MASKED AND IN FULL GEAR?
  • Position the Firefighter to begin chest compressions in less than 10 seconds?
  • Quickly apply the AED in a safe and appropriate manner for early defibrillation in less than 60 seconds?
  • Efficiently doff the breathing apparatus, turnout gear, and other equipment to expose and treat heat stroke, injuries, etc.?

This one- hour, in- person training session covers the major reasons for Firefighter deaths due to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, an overview of the 10 step FD-CPR procedure created by Leland Fire/Rescue in Southeastern North Carolina.

To hold this training- our Instructors will require the following:

  • Classroom in your facility for the (quick) powerpoint presentation and video review.
  • Open space (truck bay, training room, etc.) to practice the FD-CPR drill in 4- 5 person teams.
  • Several sets of FULL PPE and SCBAs from your Department for your personnel to wear when posing as simulated victims.
  • The willingness to learn a new set of life saving skills.

Anyone can assume they will react optimally to ANY possible emergency that is posed to them.

This training prepares ALL Firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics, & Law Enforcement to work TOGETHER in a unified, rapid, and expedient manner.

SECONDS COUNT!

"How you respond to any emergency is a direct result of your training... or lack thereof."

We bring this FREE training to you! Please email vanwaged@uhnj.org to schedule a class with our Training Center faculty at your station.

“In a pressure situation, one doesn’t, ‘Rise to the occasion’-

they fall back on their training… or lack of it.”

Medical emergencies occurring in patient care facilities are a common occurrence. While most practitioners are required to maintain basic emergency classes, such as CPR certifications- this may not be enough to adequately prepare staff for unexpected events.

University Hospital is proud to offer Emergency Simulation Training for In Hospital medical staff. This scenario based training provides the staff members with realistic cases to assist with strengthening their existing skills and providing additional ‘muscle memory’.

Some examples of the potential scenarios include:

  • A patient suddenly becomes short of breath on the examination table and quickly progresses to cardiac arrest.
  • A family member in the waiting room develops chest pain and collapses to the ground.
  • You are called to the restroom where a patient with a known drug abuse history is unresponsive on the floor.

Our training staff adjust the scenarios based on the certifications of the staff, their working environment, and the types of emergencies they typically (and atypically) would be exposed to in their line of work.

Individual students can attend our in- house training. We can also provide group rates for medical departments and organizations.
