ACLS
Advanced Cardiac Life Support

The American Heart Association Advance Cardiac Life Support course is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac-arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented. ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units. Upon successful course completion, including demonstration of skills competency in all learning stations and passing the CPR and AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test, a Megacode test and a written test, students receive an ACLS course completion card, valid for two years.

The ACLS Course includes;

  • Key changes in advanced cardiovascular life support, reflecting the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device and use of an (AED)
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Related pharmacology
  • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
  • Effective Resuscitation Team Dynamics
 
UH and Rutgers employees are only eligible for renewal for 45 days prior to your expiration date (as noted above). 
 
If you fail to receive course confirmation via email, please check your SPAM/Junk folders. Retreving your course manual is a pre-requisite for this course. 
 
 

Pre-Course Assessments (ACLS/ PALS ONLY)

The American Heart Association requires all ACLS & PALS Course participants (including recertification courses) to complete the pre-course assessment PRIOR to the course date. Students will be assigned the pre-course assessment directly to the email they provided during their course registration. If you do not receive the link to your email, please call the office. DO NOT utilize pre-course assessments found on the internet as they will not be accepted- you MUST use the link provided by the UH Training Center. 

 All students MUST pass with a score of 80% or greater. Reattempts are unlimited. 

PLEASE NOTE: Pre-Course assessments MUST be completed AT LEAST 24 hours prior to the class start time. If the pre-course assessment is not completed at that time, YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE REMOVED FROM THE CLASS and will be charged the administrative fee. Even if the precourse assessment is completed after that time- YOU WILL STILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE CLASS.

 

Employees of University Hospital and Rutgers are not eligible for “free” ACLS/PALS Provider courses when certification is current.  (example, your current card is valid through the month you are taking a course, you are only eligible for a renewal program). Employees wishing to complete a two-day program can do so but are responsible for applicable employee rates, as listed on the website). 



Course Format: 16 Hours (Over Two Days) Students MUST attend both days
